Typing speed test
Type the text on the screen for 15, 30, 60 seconds or 2 minutes. Темп shows your speed in words per minute, your accuracy and the letters where you lose time.
How to take the test in English
The test opens in English, with an English interface and English text. Russian text is one click away.
- Open the test. Above the text you will see the duration switch (15 с, 30 с, 60 с, 2 мин) and the language switch.
- Click English in the language switch. The text changes to common English words.
- Start typing. The timer starts with your first keystroke.
- When time is up you get your WPM, accuracy, a second-by-second speed chart and the letters that slowed you down.
What the test measures
Speed is words per minute (WPM). A word is any five characters including spaces, so long and short words count fairly.
Only correct characters count. Mistyped characters do not add to your speed. Rushing and making lots of mistakes gives a lower score than calm, accurate typing.
Accuracy is the share of keystrokes without a mistake. A typo you fix still counts as a mistake, so accuracy reflects how cleanly you hit the keys.
The timer only runs while you type: if you switch to another window, the test pauses until you come back.
What your score means
| WPM | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| under 30 | You type while looking at the keyboard. The fastest gain is learning not to. |
| 30–50 | A confident everyday typist. Typing with all ten fingers is the next step. |
| 50–80 | Fast. Further gains come from common letter pairs and a steady rhythm. |
| 80+ | Very fast. Try quotes or punctuation mode — they are noticeably harder. |
How to type faster
Stop looking at the keyboard
As long as your eyes jump between the screen and the keys, your speed has a ceiling. Touch typing with ten fingers removes it. Темп has touch typing lessons for the English (QWERTY) layout, starting from the home row: index fingers on F and J.
Keep accuracy above 95%
Every mistake costs twice: the time for the wrong key and the time to fix it. If your accuracy drops below 95%, slow down a little and your speed will go up.
Practise your weak letters
Everyone has a few letters and pairs where the hand hesitates. Темп remembers them from your tests and can build a text from words that contain them.
Practise little and often
Ten to fifteen minutes a day does more than an hour once a week. A one-minute test at the start of each session shows how you are doing.
What else Темп has
- 15, 30, 60 or 120-second tests with common words, book quotes or your weak letters, plus optional punctuation and numbers.
- English and Russian texts, with separate records for each language and duration.
- Touch typing lessons for the English and Russian layouts, with an on-screen keyboard that shows which finger to use.
- Races with up to five people typing the same text at once, against random opponents or friends via a link.
- Challenge a friend: send a link and your friend types the same text against your result.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
There is no single standard, but these levels are a useful guide: under 30 WPM usually means you look at the keyboard, 30–50 WPM is a confident everyday typist, 50–80 WPM is fast, and above 80 WPM is very fast. For most office work, 40–50 WPM is plenty.
How is WPM calculated?
One word is five characters, spaces included. The test counts only correctly typed characters, divides by five and scales the result to one minute. Mistyped characters add nothing to your score.
Which test length should I choose?
15 seconds is a quick warm-up, but the score depends a lot on which words come up. To track progress week to week, use 60 seconds. Two minutes shows whether you can keep your pace over a longer text.
Is the site available in English?
Yes. The whole interface is in English at typingtemp.me/en/, and the test text is English by default there. You can also switch the test to Russian text; English and Russian records are kept separately.
Do I need an account?
No. The test starts right away and your results and records are saved in your browser. Signing in by email is only needed to sync history across devices and appear on the leaderboard.
